SOCRATES: A REDEFINITION OF EDUCATION

Socrates, one of the most influential Greek thinkers developed a philosophy which, through his own teachings won the confidence and intellectual adoration from succeeding philosophers. This is evidenced in the thoughts of Plato and Aristotle. His thoughts and those of his disciples were "rediscovered" during the Renaissance and their rational, practical, and scientific ideas were to influence the thinking and the governmental, religious, and educational institutions of the entire western world.

Looking at the educational scene, Socrates enjoined all on the need to go inward in retrospect to assess onself 'because for him an unexamined life is not worth living'. This also speaks volume on the need to learn. He emphasized more to knowing. To know something is to run away from ignorance and to avoid all sorts of vices. So, a knowledgeable mind is a wise and virtous mind.

In his quest to establising a wise and vice-free society, Socrates introduced a method of dialectics, where he asks questions and expects answers. With this method, he discovered that the so-called professionals and wisemen in various areas of human endeavours where really bundle of ignorama.

From the foregoing, it is worthwhile noting that Socrates encouraged everyone to seek knowledge -“Tell me and I'll forget; show me and I may remember; involve me and I'll understand.” Every human conciousness to be enlightened, that is why he noted that“ducating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.” Knowledge is all there is. Seek knowledge and live since ignorance is worst than a virus.
